Barry Rimmer

Barry Rimmer qualified from Liverpool University in 1986 and became a Locum House Officer, then the Dental House Officer at Liverpool Dental Hospital.

In July 1987 he became an associate at Dr Chow’s Dental Practice Group in Liverpool where he stayed until he decided to open his own practice in Ashton-in-Makerfield in June 1989.

As well as successfully running his own dental practice, Barry continued his studying, and in 1995 at Sheffield University, he completed a Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and became a member of The British Society of Medical & Dental Hypnosis and The British Society of Clinical & Experimental Hypnosis. It was also at Sheffield where, in 1998 he completed a Masters Degree in Medical Science.

In fact since graduating Barry has attended and completed over 100 courses and workshops covering a full range of advanced dental studies that include Paediatric Dentistry (2002), Periodontology (2005), Endontics (2003-2005), Occlusion and Tempromandibular disorders (2007) and many more.

As Barry’s thirst for learning increased he began to develop a special interest in Implantology: In 1999 he attended a Straumann Implantology course and in 2000 began a year long implant course at the Tatum Institute. He became a member of The International Congress of Oral Implantologists and has furthered his studies in this subject with Q-Implant course (2004), Innova Implant course (2005), Soft Tissue Management in Implant Dentistry (2004), and The Harpole Center course on blades, ramus blades and ramus frames (2004).

Over the years he began to run his own hands-on Implant courses which were attended by both UK and international dentists.

Another of his enthusiasms is in orthodontics and he is a member of The International Association for Orthodontics.

This has lead to him attending numerous Derek Mahony – Full Face Orthodontic courses (2003,2004,and 2005), plus courses on Lingual Orthodontics (2005) and Damon Orthodontics (2006). Most recently he attended an Invisalign Provider workshop (May 06) and received his Invisalign Certification in October 2006.

As well as using hypnosis as a way to reduce dental anxiety Barry developed an interest in another form of anxiety control – conscious sedation. In 2002 Barry received a Postgraduate Diploma in Sedation and Pain Management and since 2000 he has regularly attended SAAD courses (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry), the most recent being their National Course in Conscious Sedation in March 2009. He also continues to attend both Advanced Life Support and Paediatric Advanced Life Support courses supported by the Resuscitation Council, again the most recent of which was in March 2009.

Barry has always been fervent about increasing his knowledge of the latest techniques in order to make sure his patients are offered and receive the very best treatment for ALL their dental needs and in 2005 he attended the Ceramic Systems course and subsequently purchased their ‘Cerec’ Machine which enables us to produce porcelain fillings, crowns and veneers in one visit. So no impressions, no temporary crowns or dressings and no second injection or appointment.

In 2007 he attended numerous Facial Aesthetic courses and is now able to provide facial rejuvenation techniques including chemical peels and dermal fillers.

In addition to his further education Barry has, over the years, successfully opened a further four practices (some of which were subsequently sold on to his then associates). His most recent practice was opened in Kirkby Lonsdale in October 2007.

Barry is a keen cyclist, both on road and mountain and extends this interest by participating in many triathlons, including the fabled Iron Man triathalon.

Barry completed the Iron Man triathlon on the 31st July 2011 in an amazing 12 hours, 42 minutes and 28 seconds. With the support of both family, friends and patients he managed to raised thousands of pounds for charity by completing this event.

Barry is married with two grown up children.
