Tooth Whitening

Everybody wants brighter, whiter teeth!

The colour of our teeth varies from person to person and can be affected by a number of factors such as age, exposure to tea, coffee, tobacco and soft drinks and even due to certain childhood illnesses, medications and trauma. Calculus and tartar can also affect the appearance of the teeth.

Tooth whitening is a simple bleaching process that lightens the colour of the teeth without the removal of any tooth structure. It is ideal for people who have HEALTHY, UNRESTORED teeth and would like to have a lighter, brighter smile.

Our dentists can determine whether or not you are a viable candidate for the tooth whitening process or if another cosmetic procedure would better meet your needs such as veneers, crowns or dental implants.

Professional Tooth Whitening

It is illegal for anyone other than a dental professional to offer tooth whitening. Recent news reports have highlighted the more harmful whitening products practices that available in the marketplace. Home kits also carry risks.

At Lonsdale Dental Practice we offer both laser and home bleaching.

Home Bleaching

This process involves the dentist making a custom-fitted bleaching splint for you that will fit your teeth precisely. You will be supplied with cartridges of bleaching solution and the dentist will provide full instructions of how to load the splint with this solution. This technique usually involves wearing the splint for a few hours every day for approximately 2 to 3 weeks.

Laser Whitening

Also known as ‘power whitening’ is said to make teeth up to five or six shades lighter. During this procedure, a rubber dam is used to protect your gums whilst the teeth are painted with a bleaching product. A light or laser is shone on the teeth to activate the chemical and speed up the whitening. The procedure takes about one hour to perform.

There may be some sensitivity for a day or two following laser bleaching but no other side-effects have been reported.

A combination of both laser and home bleaching is recommended for best results or for those with more heavily stained teeth.

How long will the results last?

The whitening effects last for approximately 1-3 years or even longer. However, teeth will darken again if exposed to staining products such as tobacco, coffee, red wine etc.

Please note: It is illegal for anyone other than a dental professional to offer tooth whitening. For example a beautician or hairdresser cannot by law carry out this procedure.
