National Stop Snoring Week 24-29th April 2017

Snoring is a serious issue with serious effects.

Snoring is the noise caused by partial closure of the airway due to the relaxation of the soft tissue in the upper throat.

In extreme cases, partial closure of the airways can result in a drop in oxygen reaching the lungs and individuals can stop breathing all together, with the sleeper starting to breath again with a gasp, choke or snort. This is a sign of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) where our body is starved of oxygen for a short period of time. The body responds by a partial awakening due to an adrenaline release, leaving sufferers often exhausted during the day. As well as day time sleepiness other effects can be high stress levels, lack of energy, driving while tired and poor relationship with partner.

OSA is also shown to contribute to more serious health issues, such as:

Increased risk of mental health concerns

Increased blood pressure

Increased risk of diabetes

Heightened chance of cardiovascular disease

AT BOTH ASHTON & LONSDALE DENTAL PRACTICES WE ARE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE & DETERMINE THE SEVERITY OF OSA.  THEN TREAT THE CONDITION WITH A RANGE OF DENTAL APPLIANCES, WHICH FOR MANY HAS A LIFE-CHANGING IMPACT.
